Mahadeepam is lit on the top of the famous Alaghar temple in Madurai every year on the full moon day of the month of Karthikai. Accordingly, the Kartikai Maha Deepam was lit at the Vellimalai Gombai site at a height of 1,400 feet at 6 pm yesterday.

Deepam was lit using 300 kg of ghee in Vellimalai Dipa Kopparai at the top of Alagarmalai. Also, the Karthika Deepa festival was held yesterday at Solaimalai Murugan Temple, the sixth abode of Lord Muruga.On this occasion, in the morning Srivalli, Deivanai Sametha Subramania Swami was specially decorated, Abhishekam, Maha Deeparathan and Swami departure. Subsequently, at 6 pm, Parani Deepam and Karthikai Maha Deepam were lit. Subsequently, Chokkapana was lit in front of Raja Gopuram with palm fronds.
