Swadeshi Movement: V.O.C. became deeply influenced by the Swadeshi Movement, which was part of the larger struggle for Indian independence. The Swadeshi Movement aimed at promoting Indian-made products and boycotting British goods as a means to exert economic pressure on the colonial rulers.
Founding of the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company: In 1906, V.O.C. founded the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company to challenge the British monopoly on shipping services. He purchased two steamships, S.S. Gaelia and S.S. Lavo, and initiated coastal shipping services along the Indian coast. This move was a significant challenge to British economic interests.
Legal Battle: The British government saw Pillai’s efforts as a direct challenge to their authority and the British-owned shipping companies. They arrested him in 1908 on charges of sedition and conspiracy. This legal battle made him a symbol of resistance to British economic exploitation.
Imprisonment and Release: V.O.C. spent nearly a decade in prison but continued to inspire other freedom fighters with his resilience and dedication. He was eventually released in 1912 due to deteriorating health and mounting public pressure.
